You need to set up a backup domain for cold email outreach to avoid putting your primary domain at risk. This allows you to send a high volume of cold emails by creating multiple domains and cold email accounts.
But how many domains do you need, and how many mailboxes should you set up for each domain? Here’s how you can calculate it using the best cold email practices for deliverability and safety.
How it works
Select how many prospects you need to reach monthly, and then determine the length of your sequence.
I recommend using 3 emails per sequence for small batches with high personalization and 5 emails per sequence for higher volumes.
These calculations are approximate and based on my recommendations:
The maturity of your domain determines the safe number of emails that can be sent daily. For a brand-new domain, the safe limit is 30 emails per mailbox per day. For older domains, I recommend 60 emails per mailbox per day.
For very mature domains (2-3 years old), I’ve successfully sent up to 100 emails per day, but using safe mode with more domains and fewer emails per day is always better.
I use 22 days per month as a benchmark, assuming emails are not sent on weekends.
I also recommend using a maximum of 4 mailboxes per domain.
When starting your cold outreach journey, it’s safer to use multiple domains and send fewer emails per day.
Always prioritize quality and deliverability over volume.
